Moving is one of the more expensive things an American household buys, and almost nobody buys it twice in quick succession. That combination — high cost, no repeat experience — is what makes it so easy to get wrong, and it is the reason this site exists.
CrateCompass is written for people doing this once, not for the industry.
What we cover
Everything here lives in one category, Moving Guides: planning a move on a realistic timeline, understanding how moving companies actually price the work, packing so that things arrive intact, and choosing storage without renting more than you need.
We stay narrow deliberately. There is enough to say about these four subjects to fill years, and most of it has never been explained plainly to the person paying for it.
How we work
- We explain the mechanism, not just the tip. Knowing that plates go on edge is useful. Knowing why — that the rim is far stronger than the face — is what lets you make the right call on the next unfamiliar item.
- We use ranges and name the variables. Moving costs depend on weight, distance, access, season, and half a dozen accessorial charges. Anyone quoting you a firm number without seeing your home is not quoting, they are advertising.
- We describe how the industry actually operates. Delivery windows, shared trailers, valuation coverage, lien processes. None of it is secret, and almost none of it is explained before the paperwork arrives.
- We update rather than repost. When rules or practices change, the original article is revised and the change is noted.
What we will not do
We do not advise on insurance claims or state what your specific coverage will pay — those answers live in your policy documents and with your carrier, and getting them wrong costs people real money. We do not give regulatory or legal advice; we point to the official federal and state consumer resources instead. And we do not sell leads. If you contact us, nobody calls you afterwards.
Who writes here
Marisol Vega — Editor. Marisol spent eight years estimating and dispatching for interstate moving companies in Phoenix and Denver. In that time she explained the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate several thousand times, and watched what happened in the cases where nobody had. She started CrateCompass because the information customers needed was never delivered until it was too late to use it, and she writes the guides she wishes she could have handed people the week before the truck showed up.
